The region
Vežká Javorina (970m) is the highest peak of Biele Karpaty. Biele Karpaty is a protected landscape area where Javorina itself has a status of a national natural reservation. Biele Karpaty hills in the west slowly transform into Chvojnická and Myjavská pahorkatina and in the east, through a relatively narrow strip of mountains of the Povaské podolie quite abruptly descend to the Váh River.
There used to be a belt of maple trees which gave the name to the peak it self (Javorina, Javor = Maple tree), this has however been replaced by a coniferous trees. In the past, meetings between the Slovak, Moravian and Czech patriots have taken place on the Javorina peak. This tradition has been preserved up until the present times and continues under the name Festival of the Czech and Slovak brotherhood which is held annually in June. The festival hosts performances by folklore groups from both sides of the border. The national natural reservation Vežká Javorina is known for well preserved forests only occasionally affected by industrial interventions. Vežká Javorina is the most famous and popular winter holiday resort of Biele Karpaty. Ski runners usually use the summer tourist routes for their ski runs.
